A notary public is a public officer appointed and commissioned by the Governor whose function is to administer oaths or affirmations; take acknowledgements; attest to the trueness of photocopies of certain documents; and to perform other duties specified by Florida law.
Notary public officials help deter fraud by witnessing the signing of important documents and verifying the identity of the signer(s), their willingness to sign the document, and their awareness of the contents of the document or transaction.
Notarization is the official fraud-deterrent process that assures the parties of a transaction that a document is authentic, and can be trusted. It is a three-part process, performed by a Notary Public, that includes of vetting, certifying and recordkeeping. Notarizations are sometimes referred to as "notarial acts."
